Finding My Ikigai. Becoming a Data Scientist.
In mid-2019, I decided to quit my job and re-train as a data scientist. I took this life-changing decision following a significant period of reflection. During this, I came across the Japanese concept of ikigai (pronounced ee-kee-guy). Ikigai has not got a direct translation, but can loosely be interpreted as “the thing that you live for”.

Outliers: A Story of Over-Zealous Exclusion?
During a recent project, I was asked to create a model to predict house prices using data from King County, Washington. Whilst completing an initial exploration, I came across a house that allegedly contained 33 bedrooms, but only 2 bathrooms. Imagine the queues for a shower in the morning. As I dug deeper, it became clear that the data was suffering from an illness : outliers. This post explores the maladie, the cures, the side-effects, and provides a real-life example (that did not go to plan).
